Ukraine was informed on border river pollution and cleaning up, Romanian Environment Ministry says

Two days ago the rivers Cisla and Viseu which both flow into Tisa were polluted with heavy metals at the water cleaning station Toroioaga. The waters turned red and yellow. Local authorities reacted immediately and starting cleaning ups the check ups every two hours.

However, the local authorities were informed by some of the forestry workers in the area and not by the company in charge of the Toroioaga water cleaning station.

Still, Romanian authorities say they informed the Ukrainian ones as soon as they found out, respecting the Espoo Convention. The European Commission was also notified, Environment Ministry spokesman Dragos Nacuta said.

The pollution had no impact at the border and also a report was filed to Ukrainian authorities, he said, after the neighbors asked for more information on the incident and the measures took to limit the spread.

Nevertheless, Ukrainian authorities also announced the EC and complained this is not the first time Romania pollutes waters at the border and never pays damages to its neighbor.
