Romania's national currency continued to lose ground this morning falling to 4.19 against the single European currency after worrying news on General Motors and the car market in the U.S.

The leu started out at 4.174 over the euro and dropped to 4.1984. At 10.15 a.m., banks were buying the euro for 4.1895 lei and selling it for 4.1985.

The regional feeling worsened after the global trend reversed as many companies foresee losses, including General Motors which is on the verge of bankruptcy, a dealer told NewsIn.

Currencies in the region were also hit by the downturn. The Polish zloty dropped from 4.494 to 4.514 over the euro and the Hungarian forint cheapened from 295.4 to 298.6 against the euro.

The American dollar strengthened from 1.328 to 1.317 over the euro and at 10.15 Romanian time, the euro stood at 1.3172 dollars.

Interbank interests for overnight deposits slipped to 8-9 percent per year, below the annual main interest rate of 10 percent.
