Romania's national currency inches to a reference exchange rate of 4.2265 lei/euro
Romania's central lender BNR posted a reference exchange rate of 4.2265 lei per euro, down 0.04 percent from the previous session, as the national currency advanced mildly in the first part of the day, in line with the Polish zloty and the Hungarian forint, on a market with low trading volumes.
BNR reported a reference level of 4.2282 lei per euro on December 31 2009.
The leu soared from 4.24 to 4.22 per euro at rising bell and then slipped to 4.23. At 1:05 p.m. banks were buying an euro with 4.2280 lei and selling it for 4.2330 lei.
In the region, the zloty hiked from 4.1180 to 4.0870 versus the euro, while the forint increased from 270.95 to 269 per euro.
For the U.S. dollar, BNR's exchange rate rose 0.14 percent to 2.9401 lei per dollar, from 2.9361 in the previous session.
On the international markets, the U.S. currency lowered from 1.4274 to 1.4396 per euro and then gained to 1.4382.
Overnight interests stood at 8-9 percent a year, slightly above the key interest rate of 8 percent a year.
