He also told the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission in Romania, Jeffrey Franks, that Romania is looking to continue the structural reforms and absorbing European funds and added that creating a fiscal area is necessary to absorb funds.
The IMF official agreed with the president and underlined there is a desperate need of European money for the local infrastructure and that the key is to remove impediments from the public sector, which make heavier sponging budget funds.
President Basescu also mentioned Romania needs to reevaluate the social costs, as there is a 3.6 billion euro deficit, "which is dramatic".
Basescu met Monday with Jeffrey Franks, the IMF representative for Romania and Bulgaria Tonny Lybek and the Fund's executive manager for 13 countries, Age Backker. The three IMF officials came to Romania to celebrate 130 years since the central lender BNR was set up.
